Uhh...Why?
Physics students dancing with communication students. Education students dancing with BREN students. Is it possible? I think so. Find a date and buy a corsage now. Embrace it...the beauty of middle school alive in grad school. When I was a younger man, let's start with around 4th grade, I used to get so pumped for those roller skating parties at the local rink. I would borrow my friend's RATT or DOKKEN t-shirt (since my parents wouldn't let me own one), gel my hair like no other, and hope to hold hands with whatever cute girl I had a crush on that week while skating and listening to Foreigner's "waiting for a girl like you." But what usually ended up happening was that I would get so nervous I would never talk with the girl, and I would try to "randomly" skate by her going as fast as I could trying to impress her. Since I never learned how to stop, and I never could do that cool leg cross-over turn, I would end up falling, hitting the wall, or skating directly into her. It never worked, it was always awkward, and I would go home sad. But, by the next skating party I had listened to Cory Hart's "Never Surrender" enough times that I was ready to give it another shot. Fast forward a bit to middle school and high school. Ah, those homecoming dances and the wonderful prom. People say that a tux will help any man, but that is simply a lie. The cumberbun doesn't hide bad skin, an even worse haircut and the awkwardness that comes with sweating profusely while holding hands, attempting to kiss your date like you saw Tom Cruise do in Top Gun, and dance like Menudo. After all of that, most of us, but not all of us, got that awkwardness ironed out in college during some random party (some of us are still trying to iron it out at OTT). All's well, right? No. Here we are in grad school. Sure, we're learning something that we might find slightly interesting, and that's nice, but the problem is that it takes up a lot of time...time we usually spend ALONE. I don't know about you, but my social skills are lacking and I blame grad school. So what can be done?? I say we embrace it. It's time. Let's have a royal rumble of social awkwardness. All departments combined for the first ever UCSB grad student formal dance......pure beauty. |
